The Bookshelf Fight

Once upon a time, there was a big fight on the bookshelf.

All the books were arguing about who was the best book

on the bookshelf. Every book on the bookshelf thought

they were more important than the others.

The book about the Wild West was telling, “I have everything

that you need to know about cowboys and Indians, wilderness

and unexplored territories. I’m the best book on the bookshelf.”

The book about science intelligently said, “I can tell you everything about the earth and planets and even the stars that are far, far away. That makes me the best book on the shelf.”

The book called Medieval Ways boasted proudly, “My stories of kings and queens and damsels in distress, castles and knights, and can keep readers interested for hours. I’m surely the better book on this bookshelf!”

The fight roared on and on as each book made their best effort to impress the others. As the fight continued, one book, at the end of the bookshelf, was very quiet if not silent. It was a book with a very plain cover. It wasn’t a tall or thick book either. It was just sitting there all by itself. The title of the book was Pajama Stories. The other books could not help but to notice that it was not concerned with the argument at all.

The book about animals, who was bragging that he could show the difference between a horse and a zebra, stopped the fight and went over to the book and asked it, “What are you all about?”

The book said sheepishly, “I’m all about bedtime stories and I help people fall asleep.”

All the books laughed loudly. The book about farming said, “You make people fall asleep. Is that all?

Then the book spoke up and said, “When I put people to sleep, they dream about being a cowboy or an Indian or about being a knight or even a king or queen. They dream of flying in space to far away planets or taking care of animals and working on farms.”

All the books were silent. They could not believe that this little book could do that, so the little book read some of the stories. He read a story about racing horses, a story about a robot and even a story about two Indians. Soon it was quiet, except for the snoring coloring book. (Snore)

The next morning, an argument started among the books. They all agreed that Pajama Stories was the best book on the bookshelf. So what do you think they were arguing about?

It was about who had the best dream the night before.  THE END
